  • 5th Wheel Hitches – Which One’s Right for You?

What can we say about fifth wheel hitches? You either need one or you don’t. If you don’t - it’s ok, keep working hard and you will get there… someday. If you do, there are some things to keep in mind.

    Truck with 5th wheel hitch

First, and foremost, SAFETY! Your truck and your trailer are some of the most expensive items you will ever own, and they pale in comparison to you and your family’s well-being. So, with that being said, let’s get to it:

Determine the Trailer’s GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)

On most trailers, this is easily found on the VIN sticker located somewhere on the trailer itself. Keep in mind that this is the unloaded weight, so watch what you are loading.

    Determine Your Truck’s Towing Capacity

Again, simple. In your owner’s manual, or on the driver’s side door tag.

If the trailer is heavier than the truck’s capacity, don’t chance it. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do in this case except get a bigger truck. Bummer…

5th wheel hitch Depending on your hauling needs, there are a variety of 5th wheel hitches available.

    Pick the Right Hitch

Bigger is not always better. It is not a good idea to put a hitch on your truck that exceeds your truck’s towing capabilities. You will likely overspend for benefits you can’t use.

The sliding bar jaw style hitch is perfect for towing less than 20,000 lbs. Once the trailer is on the hitch, the bar the handle is attached to slides inward to create a physical barrier keeping the king pin from sliding back out. These hitches have a little more play in them, and that does cause some noise. These hitches are typically used on smaller trucks, so you may want to look at a slider type, as this lets the trailer move slightly during cornering. This may help save your cab from getting hit by the trailer.

The double jaw style hitch offers a quality connection. A double jaw functions by surrounding the king pin as it enters the fifth wheel. As the kingpin of the trailer slides in and hits the rear of the jaw, the jaws snap closed and locks securely. These are found mostly on hitches in the 20,000 – 24,000 lbs. range.

The single jaw style hitch is the high end of hitches. Using a one piece locking jaw, the mechanism acts like as a wedge. Being shaped as a wedge, when it closes it takes any slack out of the connection. That means the single jaw design provides the best jaw to kingpin contact possible. Very tight connection makes for a smoother and quieter ride, and it is the safest of all the designs. Single jaw hitches are mostly found only on tow hitches rated at 25,000 lbs. or more.

We hope this sheds a little light on fifth wheel hitches. Get the right one and head on out!

  • Toyota Tundra Towing Capacity - Out of This World

Space shuttle Endeavour has been transported by rockets, its own engines and thrusters, tank-like transporters and industrial tows. Now retired and museum-bound, the NASA winged orbiter will add another, perhaps unexpected form of locomotion to its well-traveled history, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Toyota has cranked up the publicity machine when it comes to its planned towing of the space shuttle Endeavour across a Los Angeles freeway overpass. The automaker has created a website devoted to its part in the move starting Friday. The shuttle is on its way from Los Angeles International Airport, where it was dropped off by its Boeing 747 hauler, to its retirement home at the California Science Center near the city's downtown.

The Endeavour will be towed using a stock 2012 Tundra CrewMax 1/2–ton pickup, identical to the models found in Toyota dealerships, with no additional modifications made to increase towing capacity or generate more power. The Toyota Tundra towing capacity can tow up to 10,000 pounds because it is equipped with a powerful 5.7L V8 engine. Toyota has done extensive testing and worked with a heavy lifting and engineering transport company, to develop a dolly specifically for hauling the Endeavour.  The entire journey is something the world will be watching, and gives Toyota a chance to prove that the Tundra is built to do any job, even tow the space shuttle.

The automaker has created a website devoted to its part in the move starting Friday. The website includes resources and activities that provide behind-the-scenes videos, photos, activities for children and information about the Tundra Endeavour project and can be found at .

Now that we know what Toyota Motor Sales likes to tow what are some things that you like to tow with your truck, and what are some must have towing accessories that you cannot live without.

  • Weekend Specials: Reward Your Rear End

This weekend (starting today 6/22 and running through Sunday 6/24) get special discounts on select accessories at This weekend we have special deals to reward your rear end – the rear end of your vehicle, that is. Save on bumper protectors, hitch accessories, and replacement taillights.

When unloading cargo from a trunk or hatchback, it is common to slide the cargo across the bumper. When the cargo is groceries or maybe a new pillow, this isn’t a problem, but when it’s something heavy or misshapen, you can quickly damage the top of your bumper with dents, sings, or scratches. That’s where a Universal Bumper Protector can come in handy. This protector is available in two sizes (37x3 and 30x2.5) and is made from black OEM material. It has a textured surface that will not fade in the sun and installs with 3M automotive tape. Once this bad boy is in place, you can load and unload without worries.

If you’ve ever needed to check your trailer hook-up at night, or worse, tried hooking up your trailer at night, you know what a hassle it can be. You need both hands free to work, but need to get a flashlight in these to see what you’re doing. Well, Bully’s solved this problem with their Hitch Mount Backup Lights. These lights mount on any 2-inch ball mount and take only minutes to install. They light up when you are in reverse, but also have a switch that can turn the lights on independently. Best of all, they can remain in place while towing. The lights are 70 watts and are in a secure and protective high-impact ABS housing.

A good location for a spare key can be hard to find. If you make it too obvious, potential thieves might find it too easily, and if you make it too hard, you might forget yourself! Not to mention a spare car key at your house isn’t going to do you much good if you’re on the road. That’s why the Hitchsafe Key Holder is a perfect location. It’s safe and convenient, with an extremely durable all metal construction. It secures inside any 2-inch hitch receiver and you set your own 4-digit code in the combination lock. I know what you’re thinking: isn’t a receiver with a combination lock going to be a giveaway that there’s something hidden inside? That’s why each hitch safe also includes a rubber dust cover to conceal the combination dials.

Okay, all of these specials so far have been for nice and practical accessories, but what if you want something that just looks cool? LED Tail Lamp Replacement Kits are the accessories for you. These kits give your vehicle a custom look with Euro style tail lamps that use the latest in LED technology. Their diamond cut reflectors provide uniqueness even when the lights are off, and they meet or exceed all SAE/DOT standards. These lights are precision engineered for a perfect fit, which is why they are factory replacement legal. Finally, they're easy to install and are available in both chrome and black housing.

  • When It Comes To Towing, Get Some Balls

Did you just buy a camper for the family, or decide to try out your food truck business journey, well now it is time to check your balls, and make sure your truck is ready to go for your towing adventure.

The Hitch Ball, or Trailer Ball, is the most important link in your towing rig, making the big connection between your hitch and your trailer. Hitch balls give you a strong, secure trailer mounting point. The Ball Mount is equally important, as it attaches the ball that links to your hitch. Ball Mounts are durable and reliable for the most stress-free towing experience. Some offer adjustable heights and lengths, or even feature multiple balls to pull a wide array of loads. Larger metal balls will have to be used if you want to support more weight. Ball trailer hitches can be used to haul smaller cargo such as boats and smaller trailers. In some cases, they can also be used to haul smaller campers.  Now that you have covered all the towing basics and have had all your towing questions answered, enjoy your adventure.
